Great story. Factories were not only American but decentralized, so most things were made by people you might know. Your bikes were probably made in Dayton by Huffy, and Mr Smith's cash register was also made in Dayton by NCR.
I was 15 years old that year, but I can relate to this as if I was a kid like you were. Life was full and vibrant, for everyone. It was a beautiful summer.

Your memories and picture tell me you must be about the same age as me; I too remember the Bicentennial being a Big Deal, tho of course was in 3rd (?) grade and all the schools were doing it up, painting murals, reciting Declaration, etc. This year's celebration seems so much more meh. I think everyone has a much more jaded view of this country now, and I'm not talking about a political viewpoint induced by the last 4 or 8 or 12 years when I say that. It's sad for me to think that so many of those great-sounding 'founding principles' we were taught to revere have been trampled, corrupted, and/or revealed to be illusions. I love many of the people and so much of the land of my country, and whole swathes of its culture; but the politics of it is just in a shambles, imho. Thank-you for posting--it's personal stories like yours that are where and why I have faith--these details and your unique take are rewarding and good.

I think there is a lot of purposeful division in the country and I, like you, did not learn that in school. I can only put my faith in the goodness of people now, not organizations, and I can live with that for now.
